Druids U16s Welsh Champions


On Monday evening the U16s squad were crowned the FAW Academy Champions after a thrilling encounter with Haverfordwest which proceeded to penalties.

The season started with 3 groups of 5 teams, the top 2 teams from each group would then form a Super six league with the remaining clubs playing in a conference league. Cefn Druids finished second to favourites TNS but ment qualification to the super six was secured.

The super six league consisted of TNS , Cefn Druids, Llandudno, Airbus UK, Bangor City and GAP Connahs Quay, to qualify to the semi finals a top 4 finish was needed. Our boys played the first 3 games losing to Llandudno Town 0-4 , TNS 4-5 and GAP 0-3. November seen us pick up our first 3 points beating Airbus UK at home 1-0, wins against Bangor ( home and away) Llandudno and GAP Connahs Quay confirmed a top 4 finish.

The semi final saw our boys pair up with favourites TNS at the Venue, 1-1 after extra time seen the game go to penalties, our boys came out on top winning 4-1 on sending a big message over wales our progression in this years cup.

The Northern Final game paired us with Airbus UK at the Hollingsworth Group Stadium, 0-0 , extra time required, Centre back Fin Williams with a 25 yard effort sealed our win to become the first Cefn Druids academy side in history to win a FAW academy north section cup.

The Team then faced Haverfordwest in the final at Newtown's Latham Park to secure the title of 'FAW Academy Champions'.

Its's a huge achievement for the club, and everyone is proud of the hard work and determination shown by this team

Phil Bathers and Josh Millington (U16 coaches) added their thoughts on the season:

"What a journey with these sets of players , being in the academy system for only 3 years and then become champions of Wales in that time, fantastic achievement for the players, the academy and the football club"
